Jesus never said, "Thou shalt not have guns." But he did say to love our enemies and not to be afraid or worry too much. It doesn't seem like we should have a need for guns if we take Jesus seriously.
As for Americans who don't follow Jesus? I don't expect them to abide by Jesus' enemy love that might cost them their life. But I still think it's to their advantage not to have guns around since guns kindle a culture of fear, violence and retaliation.
Do you own a gun? Why or why not?
What do you hope to do with your gun?
Imagine telling someone who wants to shoot you, "I have no gun, and I love you and want to help you get your needs met." They might shoot you, or they might take your help. Either way, wouldn't it feel good to offer a way out instead of a shoot-out? I'd personally rather die knowing I didn't kill someone and tried to love them instead.
God, you're pretty crazy asking us to love our enemies. Help me to be crazy enough to follow your sacrificial love, too. Fill me with your insanity.
