When terror strikes happen, fear and retaliation often are the reactions of individuals and governments. Our fear and need for personal security turns us into the violent oppressors. We want to fight back, as if that will make peace instead of fan the flame of war and hate.
Sadly, our fear drowns out the cries of those who are most vulnerable. Our fear eclipses our ability to forgive, show compassion, and welcome the stranger and foreigner in desperate need. Jesus calls us to welcome those people as if they were Jesus himself.
And even more scandalous... Jesus tells us to love our enemy and forgive endlessly. No wonder they killed him.
Do you love or fear more?
God, replace my fear with your love.
